Calf Following Mother

Print Description

Elephant families consist of related females and their offspring and are led by the oldest female, the matriarch.  This calf is only a few months old but is expected to keep up with its mother and the rest of the herd.  Elephant mothers are extremely protective of their offspring but despite this they do not make many allowances for them.  I once saw Echo take her new born calf Ebony into a deep swamp within 24 hours of it being born.  The calf had to swim for the best part of an hour while Echo fed on some of her favourite swamp vegetation.  All that was visible of the calf was the tip it’s tiny trunk!
