Echo and Esprit

During the making of the third “Echo of the Elephants” film Echo surprised us all by coming into estrous, despite being her in late 50’s.   She was mated by Ed – known to us all as Big Ed because he was so huge.  Female elephants usually stop reproducing in their late fifties and we did not expect Echo to have any more calves.  She was named Esprit by a French lady who won a competition run by The Born free Foundation to raise money for the Amboseli Elephant research Project.  Esprit was orphaned in May 2009 when Echo died of old age.
