Echo in the later afternoon

Print Description

Echo was the matriarch of the family of elephants I have been filming and photographing for 15 years.  She was exceptionally gentle and non-aggressive and allowed me to get very close.  I shared some extraordinary moments with her, including the birth of one of her calves at night.  It is difficult to describe what it is like to have such a close and trusting relationship with a wild animal.  Here Echo rests in the late afternoon, the low cross-light highlighting her lined and characteristically warty skin. Echo died in May 2009.
