Kilimanjaro elephants in Ol Tukai Orok
Print Description
The Amboseli ecosystem supports about 1,300 elephants but there are also elephants living in the forests on the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro. These Kilimanjaro elephants are shy and come to Amboseli only occasionally. I unexpectedly came across this small family at a place the Maasai tribe call Ol Tukai Orok, which means “the Place of the Dark Palms”. The matriarch’s posture betrays her surprise and outrage at my unwelcome presence.
